As an avowed Arkham Horror junkie, the recent news from Fantasy Flight interests me greatly. They announced a new Lovecraft horror title, Mansions of Madness: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=136

From the marketing speak, it sounds like a mix of Arkham Horror, with abstract board movement and a developing narrative, Descent / Doom, with the “us versus the keeper” dynamic and Betrayal at House on the Hill with the ever-changing maps.

Sounds like fun! Now if only there were a projected release date.

At the Card Haus Games website (http://www.cardhaus.com/cgi-local/shop3.pl/SID=988732331842779693/picture=156722) you can preorder the game for $50. They say it will be available in November. The URL thing I don’t know quite how that works.

They show a cthonian mini on the page. Cthonian minis alone are worth getting excited about! Aaiiieee Shub-Niggurath!

Fantasy Flight’s production schedule puts Mansions of Madness as releasing in “winter ’10.” They’re obviously motivated to get it out in time for Christmas, but I have to think November’s really optimistic, unless they announced it just as the print run is wrapping up at the factory.

Fantasy Flight’s Arkham Horror-themed event in Minnesota this weekend included a drawing to play Mansions of Madness with the designer. There’s a session report on Boardgamegeek.

I’m interested by the puzzles. They rely on the player’s ability to solve visual puzzles — lining up colors, numbers or whatever — but also the character’s intellect, in that it limits how many moves the player has to attempt to solve the puzzle.

And now a picture from a demo at Essen!

That play session looks neat. I’ll be interested to try this out when someone inevitably acquires a copy.

Definitely a Fantasy Flight game, judging only by the number of tokens required.
