It was really only a question of time before Wizards of the Coast announced the coming of a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. And that time is now, according to a New York Times article.

Of particular interest to some will be that one of the goals of the new edition is to bring back the disenfranchised players who didn’t care for 4E’s different way of doing things. Will those disenfranchised come back from Pathfinder and other refuges, or are they perfectly happy there?

It’s way too early to tell. I think WotC engendered enough ill will among those folks that every move they make is viewed negatively.

On the other hand, folks who didn’t hate on 4E, or who actually enjoyed it, are hopeful that lots of lessons have been learned, and that the promises of a more transparent development process will lead to a game that more people want to play.

After riding the twitter streams for a bit in the morning, I read the various mainstream media articles (Hey! Changes to D&D warranted a NYTime article? This IS the era of Geek.) and some prominent bloggers’ thoughts. The folks who were invited to a playtest all had positive experiences (I expect they were a sympathetic audience).

    All things considered, I’m optimistic.

What do you think about the possibility of giving the rules a playtest once they go public, @gduke?

i think 5E boards will be full of mostly 4E adopters, so the end product may still be looked down upon by the people that fled to paizo. personally i love where paizo took 3.5 and it would be hard to convince me to invest in 5E books.
