I live in the rutland area and would really like to learn how to play some of these games, but none of my friends are interested and i sadly don’t own any yet, but looking for people who might be willing to get together and teach me with the games they own until i can buy some of my own!! Settlers of Catan, Small World, and Castle Panic have so far seemed the most interesting to me but i wouldn’t mind trying to learn like D&D or Magic the Gathering.
the only board game i own is the battlestar galactica one now that i think about it.
You might consider coming to one of our gaming days. The next one is in Middlebury, Saturday July 21st. You would definitely find lots of different games and plenty of people happy to teach them. Not sure I’ve heard of anybody from down Rutland way yet…but I could be wrong on that.
alas i dont have a car so middlebury is a bit far for me haha
The thread just below your post is a group of people looking to start a D&D game in Middlebury. I realize you don’t have a car but perhaps carpooling could be arranged to join their D&D group and/or go to the game day in Middlebury. Post here that you are looking for a ride and you may find one. The game day really is one of the best places to learn these games. There is always a ton of games to choose from and there is always a lot of people willing to teach.
Sofa Chair, who responded to your thread, also lives in Rutland, maybe he would be willing to give you a ride to the new D&D game? Never hurts to ask. And since they are now talking about forming the group, this is a great time to join.
Another great place to learn these games is attending a convention. Vermont has one gaming convention called Carnage and it is held in Fairlee the first weekend of November. They have every tabletop game you can think of. Carnage has been one of the best places for me to learn new games but also one of the best places to meet new people. Again, I realize you do not have a car but there are quite a lot of people who attend Carnage so you could probably find a ride.
Oh yeah, if you ever wanted to play Battlestar, there are several folks who LOVE that game. It usually comes out at the game days although I’m not sure if it will in July.
The next GMG game day will be this fall in September South Burlington.
While its nice to offer and ask for rides on here, i dont feel safe riding with someone i’ve never met or know anything about. I mean in college i didn’t even go places with people until i knew them a couple of months. I was kinda hoping to meet some people more close to the rutland area before i branch out to go other places.
Maybe ask those folks who have posted (MonsterVT, Sofa Chair, Joseph Nelson, I think there may be another, check the Marble Valley Gamers group here) and see if they would be willing to come to your town and meet at a local pizza place so you can meet each other? Maybe after meeting, you’d feel better about asking for a ride.
well thanks everyone for your advice, i think i’ll just wait until maybe something closer to home happens or i get a car. i just dont’ feel comfortable getting rides from people i dont really know, and a couple of brief hangouts wont really change that for me. I think i’ll just continue saving up for a car and then i can travel somewhere. until then unless somethings in rutland i’ll just work on trying to make my family play. Thanks though.
Hi Rebecca! I live in Rutland and often hold Catan nights at my house with some good friends and my wife. You would be welcome to play anytime. We are having a board game night this Saturday starting at 7 at my house. I know you have car trouble but you are welcome. Do you live in Fair Haven? I teach there.
Hello Brian!! Yea i live in the big FH haha i graduated from there in 2007, what do you teach? Catan is one of the games i have wanted to learn how to play!!! Saturday is a bummer though, i have a dinner i have to go to for the Knights of Columbus. Maybe i can make the next one though, Catan looks like a great game. i also have the BSG board game if you like BSG.
I teach at the grade school. You would have graduated. I am sort of new there. I took Peter Partch’s job. I will post or let you know next time we do Catan and such.
OH!! i subbed there this year. I was usually in for Mrs. Hardiman and worked with Kylie. I worked with her in a couple of your classes. Small world huh? haha
Ha! Fair Haven is an extremely small world. You are welcome over next time we play. I have a good group here in Rutland. I am big into boardgames. Did you see me playing incan gold with my TA? I will keep you posted!
I am in the Rutland area as well and looking for a group, are you (Brian) willing to let me come too?
Always good to have more people! We’ll try to set up a night next week – are there evenings that work better for you? Rebecca, same question for you.
Fridays are really the best night for me at the current time. It’d be awesome if they could be a bit earlier like maybe 5 or 6 just because if i borrow my parents car its harder for me to drive when its completely dark out and i dont want to be out till like 11 at night haha. Also having a game on like a Saturday during the day would be fantastic. I dont know if the Rutland Mall allows people to just like hang out at the food court but i think if we could grab some tables there and play that would be awesome.
See above although I am under 18, so if that’s a problem, I understand.
and i’m 23 so dont have to worry about parents whining haha i’m just too poor to own a car
ahhh no i missed T.A i was in Mr. Ringquests most of the time. I have always wanted to get into board games, i buy them but i just could never get anyone to play with me. My parents and friends just aren’t nerdy enough to want to learn them haha. Hopefully i’ll be able to make the next time you play cuz i would love to finally have people to play them with haha.
