Green Mountain Gamers Game to Raise Money for Extra Life

Posted Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 at 9:04am

Play Games. Heal Kids.

That’s right, you heard it. Just by simply playing games, you can help raise money for sick children by participating in Extra Life. Extra Life is the biggest gaming charity event of the year and this year, Green Mountain Gamers is encouraging fellow gamers to help by participating in Extra Life at the Carnage Gaming Convention from Nov 2nd to 4th.

Participating is easy. All you have to do is sign up at Extra Life, join or create a team, choose a Children’s Miracle Network hospital to support, ask friends and family for donations, and sit and play games, any kind of games, for a total of 24 hours.

Green Mountain Gamers has created a GMG team and is available for anyone to join. Or create a bit of competition by creating your own team (i.e. the Granite State Team or the RPG Team). Remember, anyone can participate.

GMG would also like to find those gamers who are hard core and want to go that extra mile. We are looking for the Iron Gamer. The Iron Gamer is one who will go the distance and sit and play games for 24 hours straight, or longer! Carnage has set aside 2 board game tables and one RPG table for Iron Gamers. We will need a minimum of 4 board games players (maximum of 10) and for the RPG’s, we’ll need a willing GM and players to play.

To find out how you can participate in the Iron Gamer or for more detailed information, please visit Green Mountain Gamer’s Extra Life team page.  Please note, the date at the top of the GMG team page is NOT the correct date. The GMG team plans to participate from November 2nd to 4th at Carnage.

Spring Meltdown!

Posted Sunday, April 8th, 2012 at 4:10pm

In two weeks, Green Mountain Gamers brings to you Spring Meltdown on April 21st from 10am to 10pm at the grange hall in Lyndonville.

Lyndonville has lots of delicious places to eat, although none are within walking distance of the grange hall. Because of this, Green Mountain Gamers will have some different food offerings at Spring Meltdown. Green Mountain Gamers will provide the usual sodas, chips and coffee. Instead of snack cakes, we will change it up and provide brownies and donuts (and maybe another homemade sweet). All of these items will be sold at our usual, very low price of 50 cents each.

At lunch time, a variety of cold cuts, sliced cheese, bread and condiments will be put out for you to assemble your own sandwiches. At dinner time, pizzas will
be ordered to provide a warm supper. A sandwich or a slice of pizza will cost only $2 each! We hope that these food offerings will help you obtain sustenance without cutting into valuable gaming time.

So come to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont for 12 hours of gaming! There will be a huge variety of board games to choose from, perhaps a role-playing game, and two Magic: the Gathering tournaments! If you want to pick up the latest and greatest game or some new Magic cards, you will be able to buy them from Dark Tower Gaming of St Johnsbury, Vermont or from Triple Play Games of West Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Green Mountain Game Days are always free. To help offset the cost of organzing these days, we do ask anyone who can to please make a donation (suggested $5) at the door. If you make a donation at the door, enter your name into a door prize drawing. The Spring Meltdown prize is a mystery, donated by Triple Play Games.

For more info, please visit the Green Mountain Gamers website. Read about Spring Meltdown and then join the forum thread conversation.

We hope to see you there!

Winter Weirdness 2012: Neither Snow nor Rain nor Critical Failures

Posted Monday, January 16th, 2012 at 8:00am

Gamers doing what they do best at Winter Weirdness.

Those who remembered last year’s Winter Weirdness game day might have had lousy travel weather on their mind in the run-up to the 2012 event. In spite of weather advisories the night before, the driving was fair and Green Mountain Gamers had their biggest turn-out ever, with over fifty people flocking to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Barre, Vermont for a day of tabletop gaming.

Rick of The Book Garden presents Steve with his gift certificate prize.

Rick Powell of the Book Garden arrived mid-morning to vend games and host some afternoon Magic: the Gathering. Eight players coalesced for a draft tournament that stretched into the evening. Rick also kindly donated a $50 gift certificate to the Book Garden as a door prize for Winter Weirdness. Everyone who donated to Green Mountain Gamers was eligible to enter for the door prize, which Steve Petruzzi won in the drawing.

And speaking of donations, Winter Weirdness attendees were so generous this year in giving to support the event that Green Mountain Gamers is able to make a $200 donation to the Church of the Good Shepherd. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the effort!

It was non-stop board and card games throughout the day. You can glimpse some of the games played in the pictures below. To give you an idea of the sheer range of kinds of games played, some of those played that day include A Game of Thrones, Ora et Labora and Secret Tijuana Deathmatch.

It all made for an excellent day of gaming in central Vermont. From Barre, the Green Mountain Gamers move on to Lyndonville for Spring Meltdown on April 21st. Hope to see you there! Read the rest of this entry →

Winter Weirdness 2012 on the Horizon

Posted Monday, November 21st, 2011 at 12:00pm

Andrew supervises the rail barons at Winter Weirdness 2011; the crew of Battlestar Galactica schemes in the background.

Even with less than two months to go, it feels a bit odd to talk about something that happens in 2012. That year has always had the ring of the future to it, and now it’s just around the corner.

Go boldly with us into that future as we return to the undercroft of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Barre for Winter Weirdness 2012. The forum thread is already hopping with folks suggesting games to play, like A Game of Thrones and King of Tokyo.

Additionally, the Book Garden will run a Green Mountain Game Day’s first ever Magic: the Gathering tournament. Capacity runs to 16 participants with a $15-20 buy-in per player.

The Book Garden has also kindly donated a gift certificate to be awarded at Winter Weirdness. Everyone who makes a donation at the door — half of the total proceeds of which goes to the Church of the Good Shepherd’s food shelf — may enter in the drawing. The Book Garden is conveniently located in downtown Montpelier on State Street for central Vermont’s gaming supply needs.

Winter Weirdness 2012 happens January 14th from 10:00am to 10:00pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Washington Street in Barre, Vermont. Visit the Winter Weirdness page for directions, updates and more.

Teach Your Kids to Game Week

Posted Tuesday, November 15th, 2011 at 3:46pm

DriveThruRPG is sponsoring Teach Your Kids to Game Week, Gaming parents are encouraged to introduce their children to the hobby, whatever genre of gaming they may pursue. DriveThruRPG’s site includes a list of kid-friendly RPGs that run the gamut in age level from Argyle & Crew to DC Adventures.

Elsewhere, The Escapist has updated the Adventurer’s Atlas of its Young Person’s Adventure League, which is “The Adventurer’s Atlas is your guide to the best role-playing adventure games for young people, a sort of road map to other worlds where you are free to explore as another character, a tour guide of places to go and people to be.”

If you have children, are you doing anything particular to teach them the joys of the tabletop hobby?

Summer Game ‘n Grill 2011 in Norwich, Vermont

Posted Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 at 9:00am

Summer Game 'n Grill 2011 bannerThe year continues to turn as we move on to summer. And with summer comes our second annual game day, the first one in fact. The Summer Game ‘n Grill, the one that started it all. In 2011, we convene in Norwich, Vermont on June 18th, just across the river from Hanover, New Hampshire and up the interstate from White River Junction and West Lebanon, in the local grange hall.

As this is the Summer Game ‘n Grill, there will be a grill on the premises for your meat-related needs. Bring something to throw on the fire — and then eat afterward. Other implements and condiments are recommended as necessary.

Norwich Grange Hall, on the corner of Main Street and Firehouse Lane. Snow probably not included with June weather.

There are always tons of board games to play and a role-playing adventure or two on hand. If you’ve got a desire to play something in particular, bring it up in the official forum thread and let us know you want to run it.

You can help spread the word about the Game ‘n Grill by downloading the flyer. Send it on to your friends, post it in the local game store and library, wherever the nerdly may pass by.

Spring Meltdown is in Sight

Posted Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at 1:00pm

As the snow falls on this Groundhog Day — and into tomorrow morning — keep in mind that Spring Meltdown is only a month and a half away. Green Mountain Gamers host their first annual spring game day at Ilsley Library in Middlebury, Vermont on March 19th. That’s twelve whole hours of tabletop game goodness, with members of the Vermont game-playing community coming together to share their favorite and newest games with others.

Games People Play

These game days are free for all affairs, with groups of players converging to play a game, then splitting up to play other gamers, all day long. But if you’ve got a yen to break out something that requires more planning, like a role-playing game, or is time-intensive, like Android or marathon sessions of Battlestar Galactica, say, visit the official Spring Meltdown forum thread to drum up interest, and send us a note so we can list it on the page for all to see.

Your Spring Tournament

Endeavor‘s been bandied about as the game of choice for a spring board game tournament and it’s a strong choice: easy to teach, there are many copies floating around the Vermont board gaming ranks and it’s been out long enough that most people have played it at least once.

Questions or comments on Spring Meltdown? What are you looking forward to playing? Speak out here in the comments or in the forum thread.

Winter Weirdness 2011 Update

Posted Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at 1:19pm

We’re just about a month out from Winter Weirdness 2011, taking place January 8th at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Barre, Vermont. The Winter Weirdness page has seen a spurt of activity in the last couple days with new information, so if you haven’t visited lately, now’s the time to check it out.

The core of Green Mountain Game Days is open play, where some people proffer a title and others cluster around what sounds or looks interesting. Some games, however, require a little forewarning before playing, because they’re more complex, run long or require preparation beforehand. So even going into Winter Weirdness, you can be sure of a few options on hand in addition to evergreen staples like Dominion or Settlers of Catan. Here are what some people plan to offer to teach / run on January 8th:

  • Android is set in a Blade Runner-like future, 3-5 players take on the roles of detectives investigating a heinous murder. Each detective must follow up clues in the city of New Angeles and Moon Base Heinlein as they struggle to prove their hunches correct while attempting to maintain control over their personal plotlines. This is a long game with many bits so be prepared to play for most of the day. GMed by Alex Clay (@alexbclay).
  • Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game puts the players in the shoes of the characters of the 2004 revival as they struggle to bring the fleet to Kobol safely. Only there may be one or more Cylons secretly working against the group. This game will include the Pegasus and Exodus expansions, assuming the latter is available in time. GMed by Carlo (@vorpalgens).
  • Fiasco is a collaborative storytelling game about “ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control.” This is a test of a science fiction-themed playset created by Tyler (@blinovitch).
  • Gamma World is the latest edition of the post-apocalyptic role-playing game. It’s a gonzo romp through the aftermath of the Megawhoops with mutant powers and jury-rigged technology. GMed by Tyler (@blinovitch).
  • Ticket to Ride, tournament-style, in which 12-16 players play off to a final round, with a prize for the winner of the final round.
  • Titan (Valley Games edition) is a reprint of the Avalon Hill monster slug-athon.  Travel around the main board collecting troops, and battle on the terrain boards when rival armies meet. GMed by John (@cudunn).

Don’t see something you’re looking for? Bring it up in the forum thread — or just chat about what you’re looking forward to.

See you next month in Barre!
